The Honor's Dance ...

The Honors Dance can easily come as after thought for the engaged, but outside of walking you down the aisle, precious little attention is focused on the Father of the Bride. Given that traditionally he is expected to foot some of the bill, he deserves to look well when his moment to shine comes. Even if you never take lessons with your father, PLEASE practice with him! Your dad has been around for a long time and may feel he knows how to dance, if so, Great! But be sure you give him a chance to show you what he knows, so that you will be prepared for the Honors Dance. As wedding dance instructors we attend a lot of weddings, and we feel that to have your parents dancing at your wedding is a symbolic blessing or benediction for you, the happy couple.

Let Dad pick out the song for the Daddy-Daughter Dance!


Dads often have a lot handed to them during the planning of the wedding, but once it starts they take a back seat to the new man in your life. It is fine to make suggestions and he may be touched by your choices but remember that your father might have a song in mind. Since it is his big moment at the wedding, you should let your dad have a say. Old time Rock and Roll, the "Lion King" Song or Frank Sinatra, it doesn't matter. Let him pick the song. He will move better to music he knows and likes and be much less nervous about dancing in front of the crowd.

5) A Wedding Tradition Explained!

WHAT IS THE HONOR'S DANCE!
The Bride dancing with her father is biggest acknowledgment of the special relationship between father and daughter at the wedding. In ancient times the father actually owned the daughter so giving her away was really a big deal! Today thankfully, it is a more emotional tradition. Also more and more we are happy to see that Grooms and their Mothers are embracing the Honor's Dance as well.

In this country, the Honors Dance or Dances are done some time after the First Dance, usually near cake cutting time. The Europeans reverse this so that Dad is symbolically letting go of his "little girl" again. The European choice is more symbolic, the American way showcases the Bride and Groom more. It also allows for the Groom to take his mother onto the floor for her own dance, or midway through the Daddy Daughter Dance (if the father doesn't feel secure with his dancing), which then can snowball into general dancing for the wedding party and the guests.
