2) A Wedding Tradition Explained!

"Why do friends of the Bride and the Groom sit on opposite sides of the church?"

When you arrive to attend a wedding the usher will ask "Bride or Groom?" Friends of the Bride are seated on the left and friends of the Groom are seated on the right. This tradition dates way back to the time when marriages were used to heal and cement relations between hostile tribes. Highly placed fathers would offer their daughters' hand as peace offerings to the noble sons of warring tribes. Because of the innate hostility, the families were placed on opposite sides of the church so the ceremony could be performed without bloodshed. The ceremony united the two warring factions into one family, hopefully resolving the danger of war.

3) Kim's Wedding Tips!

Often it is more cost effective to have the groomsmen act as ushers as well. General rule of thumb is one usher for 50 guests, but if you have more ushers/groomsmen the whole process will flow more smoothly. They should be told to help the elderly guests to their seats. If the mothers of the Bride and Groom are not in the ceremony itself then they are normally escorted down the aisle on the arm of an usher. If one of the couple has a much larger family than the other, ushers should lead people who are friends of both to sit on the side of the smaller family to even things out and avoid having things looking lopsided.

4) Kim's Wedding Dance Tip "Spin the Bride!!"

It is my belief that all women love to spin in a big dress and our wedding gown generally will have a bigger, more swirly skirt than anything else in our wardrobe. When we spin around and the skirt flares out suddenly the woman feels beautiful. It takes us back to age 5 twirling in our mother's dress and we smile like a happy child. Additionally we stop thinking and leading. I give the guys I teach marching orders to spin the girl at least 5 times over the course of the song. This is a minimum quota! When in doubt, spin her again! The only warning I would give is that since the skirt will turn more slowly that the Bride, be sure to take several steps before spinning her again. If the gown is very big a double spin will result in having the dress wrapped around her legs too tightly.

5) Group Classes

Our teachers run events and perform locally on a regular basis.

1st & 3rd Friday of every month at Generations Dance Studio in Alexandria. The fabulous Fabio Bonini will be teaching the sexy Argentine Tango with a practice party "Milonga" afterwards.
Kim Bosch van Drakenstein will be performing a tango exhibition with Fabio Bonini during the Milonga. The "total beginner" lesson is still 7:30-8:15pm and the "beginners’ challenge" lesson runs 8:15-9pm. From 9pm-midnight dance at the MILONGA (Argentine Tango Dance). Only $12! Society Ball celebrating the American-Austrian 50th Anniversary,

The American-Austrian Society will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of its founding with an elegant white-tie Ball at the Embassy of Austria. The wonderful 14-piece Con Brio Orchestra will sweep you off your feet with the music of Strauss, Waldteufel, and Lehar. A traditional Austrian dessert buffet will be served, accompanied by Austrian wines and champagnes. There will also be dance and vocal performances and door prizes! The doors of the Austrian Embassy open at 8:00 PM and dancing goes until 1:00 AM. Valet parking available. Capacity is limited. Tickets for members are $90 per person, for guests $120 per person.
