A Wedding Tradition Explained!
"Jumping
The Broom"
Many historians believe broom jumping originated in the southern U.S.
during the time of slavery, slaves could not legally marry, and so an
alternative ceremony for marking a couple's commitment was adopted.
Some believe it comes from an African tribal marriage ritual of placing
sticks on the ground which represent the couple's new home. Some say
it stems from an African custom of the Bride to sweep the home of her
mother-in-law on her wedding day. Coincidentally, there was a similar
Celtic tradition. In the early days of Christianity in Ireland, rituals
tended to be a blend of the Pagan with the Christian. Couples who couldn't
wait until the traveling priest turned up would perform a hand fasting
ceremony, tying their wrists together as a symbol of their commitment
to one another. They would then join hands and jump over a broom to
guarantee children. The broom was a Celtic symbol of fertility; Neo-pagans
have also incorporated it into their hand fastings. Here the broom represents
a threshold. The hand fasted couple, although still individuals, begin
a new life together. Jumping over the broom represents crossing this
threshold into new territory, with your life vitally connected to another's.
The leap that the couple takes over the broom is symbolic of starting
a new life with another person which does require a "leap of faith".

Kim's Wedding Tips!
Spend some time and internet research if you decide to incorporate old
traditions. If you do decide to purchase a ceremonial broom make sure
it is one you like. Since it will be a permanent memento from your wedding,
you want it to be very nice and of high quality. One practice becoming
more prevalent is to have the guests all tie a ribbon to the broom before
the newlyweds take the leap. This lends a real sense of community and
anticipation to the event. As with any tradition which might not be
known to all of your guests, it is a good idea to have someone announce
the event and explain it's relevance and symbolism. This way your traditions
can be shared and fully appreciated by all present.

Kim's Wedding Dance Tip "Stand
Straight and Walk Tall!"
Your mother always told you to stand up straight and now you know why...She
wanted you to dance! Keeping your head up, shoulders back and tummy
in, will not only make your gowns and tuxes look better, it will make
you feel better. So often when people are not used to being watched
they slump as if they were trying to make themselves smaller or less
noticeable. This is particularly true when people dance. It is your
wedding -- and everyone is going to notice you no matter what! Look
at our students Victor and Karen. He is looking into her eyes, not at
her feet. He picked up the moves very quickly, but one of the most notable
dance advantages he has is excellent posture. It gives him an air of
total confidence on the dance floor and off. This also makes him very
easy to follow and look great dancing.
