A Wedding Tradition Explained!
"The Finnish Weaning Waltz"
At the end of some wedding receptions in Finland, the last dance is
the the weaning-waltz. An instrumental waltz is played. The women
start
dancing with
the Bride
and men with the Groom. Both adults and children take part. Everybody
dances briefly with the Bride or Groom.
The
idea is to test how quickly the Bride and Groom will
forget each other. Of course, at the end of the weaning-waltz,
the two of them dance together
again to show that they never will.

Kim's Wedding Tips!
Picking The Song You Dance To At Your Wedding
The
Most Important thing about the song you dance to is that YOU love
it.
Pick a song
that both of your really like, especially if it reminds you of each
other or holds some special memories
for you. Keep in
mind
that if you
choose a really upbeat song it may be a swing which can add a fun
element to your wedding but will not give you the formal, gliding
around the floor look. Never let anyone tell you not to dance to
a specific
song. I have had several students come to me from traditional studios
where they were told they couldn't dance to the song they had chosen
because it was too fast or too slow. They were right to leave. A
dance teacher can tell you if your song is easy or hard to dance
to (that
is part
of their job), but YOU pay dance instructors to teach you how to
dance. Period. You can have your friends and family listen to the
words of your song to tell you if they think it is appropriate if
you are unsure. BUT, go out and choose precisely the song you want
regardless of what anyone says! Your only First Dance together
as Husband and Wife is your moment in your wedding and your memories!
Let them reflect your personalities.

Kim's Wedding Dance Tip
"An Egg Shaped Frame"
In Ballroom Dancing the frame is the way we communicate; it is the
foundation of Lead and Follow in Partner Dancing. Avoid crushing into
each other. One way to think of the positioning is like you are holding
up a very large egg between you. You want to have good posture so
your chests are up, The Man's right hand under the woman's left shoulder
blade with her left hand maintaining the frame by connecting with his
shoulder. The Man's left hand gently clasps the Lady's right hand.
Both should maintain the position at about jaw level for the woman,
halfway between you and out so that the Man and the Woman can have
their arms gently curved. Ideally our heads are slightly back, so that
the back of our heads are over our heels. Our students are forgivably
staring into each other's eyes, while dancing their first dance! Check
out the frame. This is a comfortable position but it looks deceptively
soft.
In reality, Leading and Following in Ballroom Dancing very much a joint
effort. Just like they said in Dirty Dancing: This is your space, and
this is my space". This shape allows the man to guide the woman anywhere
he likes, and allows the woman to sense the man's intentions and move
effortlessly with him!
